On June 2, 2026, the Rotary Club of Joliet proudly honored two remarkable community leaders—Jack Gleason and Donald O’Brien—as recipients of the prestigious Silver Eagle Award during its weekly meeting.
The Silver Eagle Award recognizes outstanding individuals whose volunteer service and dedication have made a meaningful and lasting difference in the Joliet area. This year’s honorees exemplify Rotary’s mission of
“Service Above Self” through their unwavering commitment to others.
Donald O’Brien, a volunteer with Lightways Hospice and Serious Care, was recognized for both his distinguished military service and his continued dedication to serving fellow veterans. Don served as a U.S. Army medic in Vietnam from 1965 to 1967, where he cared for wounded soldiers during three major military operations. His bravery and compassion under fire earned him numerous honors, including the Silver Star and Purple Heart.
Today, Don continues his legacy of service as a Lightways Veteran Volunteer. He visits fellow veterans in their homes and long-term care communities, leading meaningful pinning ceremonies that honor their service and sacrifice. His compassion, humility, and deep respect for others have made a profound impact on the lives of the veterans and families he serves.
Jack Gleason was honored for his extraordinary and longstanding commitment to healthcare and community service through his involvement with Silver Cross Hospital. As an in-service volunteer, Jack has dedicated countless hours in support of the hospital’s mission to provide high-quality care to the community. His contributions have helped strengthen programs, enhance patient experiences, and support the hospital’s ongoing growth and innovation.
Beyond his formal leadership, Jack is known for his generous spirit, thoughtful mentorship, and willingness to step forward whenever help is needed. His passion for service extends beyond the hospital, reflecting a deep commitment to improving the health and well-being of the broader Joliet community. Through his vision, advocacy, and hands-on involvement, Jack has made a lasting and meaningful impact that will benefit generations to come.
